Kayvan Novak consistently calls different members of the public in his show Fonejacker; the leading character is a fictitious prank caller who plays different personas in his telephonic exploitations. Throughout the show on-screen animations are used, featuring pictures of people with moving mouths, in a style reminiscent of Monty Python. Scenes using hidden filming accompany the show, with the Fonejacker in the street calling a nearby company. Except for the Pilot – where he wore black – he always wears a red and white balaclava and sunglasses.
While Kayvan Novak’s figure is kept anonymous by the Fonejacker costume, he can be clearly seen during Mr. Doovdé’s calls, advertising DVD players and dfs. as a model.
Fonejacker episodes usually start with a definition of what the term “fonejack” means: to seize control of a telephone conversation by farce esp – to divert it from reason and logic; subsequently, the protagonist makes a call to the Directory Enquires from an American payphone, passing off as Mr. Doovdé. Surprisingly, it was not Mr. Doovdé who headlined episode five; it was Mike.
The final episode of the first series revealed that two callers had previously been fonejacked by George, implying that the Fonejacker series 2 does not inform the victim the call was a prank. Those specific victims hadn’t been seen in other episodes, so not all Fonejacks are broadcast.
Channel 4 runs a show called Comedy Lab centered on the new comic talent; this is where Fonejacker’s pilot first aired, in 2006. As consequence of its popularity, in 2006 the show was granted a six-part series, which would get broadcast from April 2007 on E4. On December 29, 2006, a Christmas special entitled Fonejacker’s Christmas Message was broadcast, comprising a five-minute summary of the pilot. The Fonejacker Christmas special finished with the following message: Coming April 2007 – Don’t Pick Up The Phone.
Clips from the show’s pilot were put together as a thirty second advert; the teaser trailer started to air on March on Channel 4 and E4. Somehow, the show was put on hold for undisclosed reasons, According to rumours, it would start on June 7 2007, however that didn’t happen. After this, rumours spread that the show would start on June 7 2007, which was also untrue. Fans started thinking the show was hopeless, however new trailers were introduced in June. Within the clips, a television was shown in the Fonejacker’s flat, broadcasting news reports: “New sightings of the Fonejacker”, and all the while he continued making his calls. The advert ended with the catchphrase Don’t Pick Up The Phone and finished with the same E4 website. Not many days after that, there was already a newer advert.
The FoneJacker, posing as Terry Tibbs, called into the Big Brother’s Little Brother just a few hours before the first show, engaging conversation about a antique fireplace with a viewer called Andrew. However, there was no mention of Fonejacker as presenter Dermot O’Leary seemed confused. Another part of the show’s “over-the-top” advertising included a “Fonejacker Tonight 10-30” on display throughout the night below E4’s on-screen graphic.
The fan site has many soundboards, im quite particular to the fonejacker soundboard that features terry tibbs, this one always makes me giggle.
At 10-30pm on July 5, 2007 the usage of strong profanity was raised to unprecedented marks, with Fonejacker’s show premiere. The second series of Fonejacker was first aired on September 9 2008. It’s still unknown if there will be a third series.
