Though there remains a void between the quantity and quality of roles between actors and actresses, Hollywood’s women are enjoying unprecedented power these days. So then, who are the considered to be the best actresses in Hollywood at the moment…

#10. Jodie Foster

An understated performer who made it into the big time when she appeared as a child prostitute in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, she has combined dramatic roles in niche films with mainstream action movie roles. Her most remembered role is in Jonathan Demme’s movie The Silence of the Lambs. Other standout performances by her include Panic Room and The Brave One.

#9. Nicole Kidman

One of the most powerful female actors in Hollywood, she has been acting in movies since childhood. Even though she grew up in Australia, she was actually born in Hawaii. Her private life has, unfortunately, overshadowed he career at times, but the ending of her marriage to Tom Cruise has allowed her films to come fully into focus. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the 2002 movie The Hours.

Halle Berry was the first actress of African-American descent to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her 2001 performance in Monster’s Ball. She is best known for her roles in James Bond movie Die Another Day, playing Bond Girl Jinx, and the X-Men movies, in which she plays fan favorite Storm.

Whether starring in small art films or big, mainstream hits, she consistently delivers strong, powerful performances. Critical acclaim was achieved early on in her career for her roles in The Deer Hunter and Kramer Versus Kramer, winning the Best Actress Oscar for the latter. She has taken on roles in all sorts of films, from comedy (Death Becomes Her), to hard-hitting drama (The Deer Hunter), to action (The River Wild), to musicals (Mamma Mia).
