Well the second weekend of the summer movie season has ended and the weekend box office numbers are in delivering the first potential flop of the 2008 summer movie season – “Speed Racer”.
The Wachowski Brothers remake of the cartoon series “Speed Racer” only brought in $20.2 mil well below expected results for the $100 mil production. Speed Racer could not compare to the weekend’s number one for the second weekend in a row “Iron Man” taking in an estimated $50.5 mil. I think they should have opened “Speed Racer” at the beginning of April to give it any chance. There’s no way it can compare to the other summer blockbusters especially the other family oriented summer films like “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”.
The top five movies at box office were topped off by movies that would be good to take a date to: (3) “What Happens in Vegas” $20 mil, (4) “Made of Honor,” $7.6 mil, and (5) “Baby Mama,” $5.8 mil.
The top 10 estimated box office receipts for the week ending 11 May 2008 according to Media By Numbers LLC are:
1. “Iron Man,” $50.5 mil.
2. “Speed Racer,” $20.2 mil.
3. “What Happens in Vegas,” $20 mil.
4. “Made of Honor,” $7.6 mil.
5. “Baby Mama,” $5.8 mil.
6. “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” $3.8 mil.
7. “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay,” $3.2 mil.
8. “The Forbidden Kingdom,” $1.9 mil.
9. “Nim’s Island,” $1.3 mil.
10. “Redbelt,” $1.1 mil.
