Everyone knows that Fawlty Towers is one of the best sitcoms to ever hit the screens here in the UK and most people also know that the series was based in Torquay. Although you would certainly not find a hotel like this in Torquay and it is a place that you would enjoy spa breaks and hotels in Devon it is worth knowing some of the characters in the sitcom as it is such a great television series and one well worth watching if you have not seen it before.

Basil Fawlty

John Cleese is of course the actor behind this ingenious character and based it on a hotel manager he spotted when staying at a Torquay hotel in 1970. Well Basil is of course the manger of the towers and his goal is to make the hotel a lot higher in the class that it appeals too, the problem is, he has a very big lack of patience and a high temper and can never seem to get on with his guests or his staff members. Although he seems to think himself boss of the joint it seems that he is petrified of his wife and as soon as she mentions his name he immediately backs down.

Sybil Fawlty

The wife of Basil, played by Prunella Scales is energetic and petite. She lets Basil run the hotel whilst mostly talking to her friends over the telephone. She comes in and puts a stop to whatever nonsense Basil is up to when he is at the height of it and all she has to do is say his name.

Manuel

My favourite character, played by Andrew Sachs, is a Spanish waiter who means well but is very dis-organised and is always being picked on by Basil Fawlty. By picked on I am talking physically and mentally abused i.e. a frying pan to the head.

Torquay is actually a great place to go to and if you want to take your Christmas holidays then you need to do it!
