Pretty much everyone in countries such as the UK, United States, Canada, New Zeeland & Australia etcetera should have at least heard of the world famous science Fiction television series Dr. Who from the BBC! Now that Dr. Who is back on television since 05 after it’s fifteen year pause the series has gotten very popular again, so mush so in fact that even the Science fiction channel has taken an interest in the series.
Thanks to the new serial DW is currently officially the longest running Science fiction serial ever with the first episode broadcasted by the BBC on November the twenty third 1963, an episode in which the Doctor & his companions journeyed back 100,000 years into Earth’s past to help out some somewhat stupid cavemen so that they could discover fire. The second longest running Sci-Fi show is Star Trek which began back in nineteen sixty thee, but does not currently have any new stories being produced.
With the huge popularity of DW, the BBC began making Doctor Who Audio back in the mid seventies for cassette and LP. The 1st releases were mostly soundtracks from the television shows with binding narration by the Doctors. However due to their popularity soon after episodes were made specifically for Audio release solely, often narrated by past Drs of the TV series.
Also the Dr. Who Audio family was expanded with the release of Audios from stories that had only appeared on the radio. Another good use the BBC have found for audio with Doctor Who is the re-creation of old episodes that had been lost. The collection spans all the way though the first Doctor right up until the present Dr, David Tennant. Additionally Torchwood Audio & Sarah Jane Audio Books have also been added in recent times.
One of the really good things about DW Audios is that they provide us the freedom to listen to our favorite stories anywhere we want with the use of the modern mp3 player. With multitasking becoming everyday more an important part of our lives it’s not surprising that Audiobook sales for both DW and in general have increased. Another reason why individuals like Doctor Who audio is because in many cases the audio stories are now read by the actors of the serial. They are also a great choice for long car rides, especially with children as there’s nothing like a good DW episode to keep them busy.
The way things stand right now it looks like Dr. Who and its spin-off serial torchwood and the Sarah Jane adventures are doing really well so things look good for fans to be able to be entertained by them for a number of years to come.
